UFC 211: Stipe Miocic gets his Revenge

Stipe Miocic avenges his loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 211.

Miocic last loss was to Junior Dos Santos, which helped him become a better fighter and eventually led to Miocic winning the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Dos Santos would have set backs from injuries and opponents dropping out of fights. After Dos Santos fight with Stefan Struve fell through, it gave Dos Santos a chance to fight for the championship and gave Miocic a chance to avenge his loss.’

In the Main Event of UFC 211, Miocic put the pressure on Dos Santos early in the fight. Miocic was able to get Dos Santos to back up against the cage and would land huge strikes to the head.  Dos Santos was able to hurt Miocic with leg kicks, which the commentary team pointed out would be threat to Miocic ability to fight at his best. Miocic would continue to pressure Dos Santos and would keep catching Dos Santos, as Dos Santos kept circling away from the cage. Dos Santos took one shot too many and Miocic would knockout Dos Santos in the first round.

Miocic win over Dos Santos is his 2nd successful title defense and his 5th straight win. Miocic didn’t call anyone out after the fight, but the Heavyweight Division is in a interesting place. Cain Velazquez is someone that can be next in line for a title fight, but has problems staying healthy. Francis Ngannou is also someone that can be next in line for a title fight as well. For now, Miocic win over Dos Santos ties for the most successful title defense in the Heavyweight Division and propels Miocic into consideration as one of the best Heavyweights ever in the UFC.

UFC 211 Preview

UFC 211 can be one of the best UFC Pay Per View by the end of the year. On the Main Card, every fight feels important and can impact the UFC going forward. The Main Event and Co Main Event will both have championships on the line. The Main Card will also feature fights that can change the rankings or lead to championship fights in the near future.  In the previous article, I spoke on the Main Event and who will win. Now I will preview the remaining fights on the Main Card.

Krzysztof Jotko vs David Branch

UFC 211 will be David Branch return to the UFC. Branch last fight in the UFC was in 2011, when Branch loss to Rousimar Palhares by submission via Kneebar.  Branch would fight outside of the UFC, most notably  World Series of fighting and has gained success. Branch is coming back to fight in the Middleweight Division against Krzysztof Jotko, who is the 9th ranked fighter in the Division.  Jotko is on a 5 fight win streak , with his last notable win against Thales Leites at UFC fight Night: Bader vs Nogueira 2 in 2016.

Prediction: Branch is coming back at UFC 211, with hype and success from his time outside of the UFC. However, I believe Jotko is going to ruin the return and beat Branch. At 35 years old and the high expectations for Branch return, I don’t think Branch will beat Jotko. Jotko is coming off a big win against Leites and I believe Jotko is going to continue his success at UFC 211, with a win over Branch.

Winner: Krzysztof Jotko

Frankie Edgar vs Yair Rodriguez

Yair Rodriguez at 24 years old, is on the path of becoming a future champion in the UFC. Rodriguez is coming off his biggest win of his career against the legendary BJ Penn, where Rodriguez was in the Main Event for the first time.  With his unorthodox striking, Rodriguez will face his biggest challenge to date  Frankie Edgar. Edgar is a former Lightweight Champion and is ranked 2nd in the Featherweight Division. Edgar at age 35, still has the same power and speed from when he was the Lightweight Champion in the UFC.  At age 35, Edgar still has the desire to be the Featherweight Champion.

Prediction: Rodriguez has the talent to one day be a champion, but Edgar is going to be too much for him. Edgar has the wrestling, jujitsu and the striking ability to overwhelm Rodriguez. This is a big step up in competition for Rodriguez and it’s not a good match up. I expect Edgar to pressure Rodriguez from the start of the first round and dominate the entire fight.

Winner: Frankie Edgar

Demian Maia vs Jorge Masvidal

This fight is a sleeper and has a major impact on the Welterweight Division. Demian Maia has been on 6 fight win streak and many feel should be fighting for the Welterweight Championship. Maia recent win was against Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night in Vancouver, which showcased his dominance and jujitsu beating Condit by Rear Naked Choke. Jorge Masvidal is coming off his biggest win, defeating Donald Cerrone by Knockout. Masvidal is also on a win streak, winning three of his last fights. This fight is the biggest fight of Masvidal career and a win would put him in title contention.

Prediction: This fight is to close to call and that is what makes this fight interesting. Masvidal striking is too dangerous and has the power to knock Maia out cold. However, Maia is the bigger fighter and has the power to take Masvidal down. If Maia gets Masvidal on the ground, Maia can submit or control the Masvidal on the ground with ease. It’s a tough fight to call, but I’m going with Maia. I think Maia has good enough striking to stand with Masvidal, to set up his takedowns and control Masvidal on the ground.

Winner- Demian Maia

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Jessica Andrade

Can Jessica Andrade dethrone Joanna Jedrzejczyk?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk has been dominating the Strawweight Division, since coming to the UFC and winning the Strawweight Championship. Jedrzejczyk is currently on a 7 fight win streak and has successfully defended the championship 4 times. Jedrzejczyk has won decisively against everyone she has faced and will look to retain her championship for the 5 time. Jessica Andrade is the underdog in this fight, but has the ability to pull of an upset. Andrade has great jujitsu and power to knockout or to takedown Jedrzejczyk.  Andrade has to make this an ugly fight and pressure Jedrzejczyk early.

Prediction- I think Jedrzejczyk is just to good and will beat Andrade decisively. Andrade best chance at winning this fight is to make it an ugly fight and put pressure on Jedrzejczyk. Jedrzejczyk striking ability is on another level compared to Andrade and looks to be getting better at wrestling as well. Andrade will put up a good fight, but it won’t be enough.

Winner- Joanna Jedrzejczyk

UFC 211:Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2 preview

Can Stipe Miocic avenge his loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 211?

This weekend UFC 211 will feature a rematch between UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic and Junior Dos Santos for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. In their first fight back in 2014, Dos Santos would win by Unanimous Decision in a close fight.  Since then Dos Santos has been dealing with injuries and fights being cancelled, due to his opponents being injured as well. After Miocic fight with Dos Santos, Miocic has been on a 4 fight winning streak and has become the reigning UFC heavyweight Champion. Miocic has also gotten better from his fight with Dos Santos. Unlike their first fight, Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2 will be for the UFC Heavyweight Championship and both fighters are looking prove they are the best in their Division.

Dos Santos last win, was in April 10, 2016 at UFC Fight Night against Ben Rothwell. Completely outclassing Rothwell, Dos Santos would win by Unanimous Decision and looked in great shape. Dos Santos was supposed to fight Stefan Struve in February, but Struve would injure his shoulder and cancel the fight.  UFC 211 will be Dos Santos first fight back in the Octagon in over a year. However, Dos Santos will go into the Main Event, knowing he has victory over Miocic and has an idea of what to expect in their rematch. A win this weekend for Dos Santos not only will make him a 2 time UFC Heavyweight Champion, but puts him in the conversation as one of the best Heavyweights in UFC history.

Since his loss to Dos Santos, Miocic has took the Heavyweight Division by storm. Miocic would Knockout MMA Heavyweight Legends in Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski and would Knockout Fabricio Werdum to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion. Miocic would then defend and retain his Championship against Alistair Overeem, winning by Knockout at UFC 203. In the last two years, Miocic has become the face of the Heavyweight Division. However, Miocic biggest fight in his career awaits him at UFC 211. A win over Dos Santos can cement his legacy and help make his case as someone that should be mentioned as one of the greatest pound for pound fighter in the UFC.

Prediction: While Dos Santos already has a victory over Miocic, its hard not to pick Miocic to win this fight. Miocic has been the more active fighter and has gotten better, from the last time he fought Dos Santos.  Dos Santos is coming into the fight, not fighting in over a year and a question can be made if he will have any ring rust.  Also a question can be made, is Dos Santos coming into this fight in the same shape like when he fought Rothwell last year. However, Dos Santos can Knockout anyone and even dropped Miocic in their first fight. Still at UFC 211, I predict Miocic will get the win and will remain the best in the Heavyweight Division.
